AnxietyHow to calm your mind during these stressful times

The world today looks seemingly different than it used to be just a couple of years ago. It is no doubt that the pandemic has drastically changed the very manner in which we carry out everyday activities. With never-ending lockdowns and the fear of newer variants coming up, there is an ever-increasing feeling of uncertainty and anxiety.

Working or schooling from home, lack of me-time, reduced physical activity and the absence of social, physical and cultural interactions can take a huge toll on our physical and mental wellbeing. While we’re forced to stay indoors once again and are adapting to the new norms of living, there is one question that bothers us all: “How to stay calm during such worrisome times?”

Not sure about the answer? Here are 6 ways in which you can calm your mind and manage anxiety when at home.

Follow a defined schedule

Working or taking classes from home has undesirably altered the sleep-wake routines we once used to strictly adhere to. Frequent changes or a lack of consistency can worsen your physical and mental health. Instead, create a breathable daily routine that you can stick to and try to follow religiously. For starters, wake up and sleep around the same time every day and start your day with a little meditation or breathing exercises.

Draw the line between work & leisure

Although the new work culture provides increased flexibility and comfort, it greatly blurs out the line between work and personal space. In such times, it is necessary to keep the two separate to avoid overlapping. For instance, limiting your work activity to the workspace only, taking short breaks for lunch and leisure, avoiding working on the bed and concluding your tasks at the same time every evening is a great way to WFH.

Our pro tip? Transition every evening from work to leisure with a few minutes of self-time, sip on your favourite beverage, play some music or get some fresh air. This helps your mind glide smoothly into the next part of your day, dinner, and sleep!

Figure out the Workout!

Whether it is a slow-paced, relaxing yoga routine or an energetic full-body workout, physical exercise releases endorphins that help improve mood, reduce stress and strengthen your immune system. Additionally, no matter what your form of exercise, take some time to practice mindful breathing and meditate.

Social media – Consume it mindfully

Perhaps our biggest source of both information and entertainment, spending too much time on social media can quickly spiral down into feelings of uneasiness, panic, and anxiety. Rather, keep a check on your screen time, monitor the kind of content you consume, and stay away from false, fear-inducing news.

Try aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is one of the best ways to unwind, relax and calm your nerves. It makes use of various natural herbs like lavender, chamomile, rosemary and others that have a pleasant effect on your mind and body.

It’s bedtime folks

Lights off! It’s time to sleep. Getting a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep is essential for both the mind and body. Sleep disturbances or irregular patterns increase stress levels and can worsen anxiety. That’s why you’ve got to make sure you sleep well, and on time.
